This IBM Think article, co-authored by Shweta Jain and Stephen Coraggio, examines how frontier AI is lowering the barriers to vulnerability discovery, exploit development and large-scale cyber operations, while financial institutions undertake a transition to post-quantum cryptography (PQC). It argues that banks must inventory and reengineer cryptographic dependencies embedded across applications, networks, APIs, vendors and business processes as quantum advances threaten existing encryption and AI accelerates attacks. The article defines cyber resilience as an executive capability for managed degradation: preserving core clearing, settlement and liquidity functions while intentionally shedding non-essential digital services during sustained compromise, rather than treating resilience as simple IT recovery to predefined recovery-time objectives.
