esp32sim

esp32sim is an open-source ESP32 emulator written in Rust. It uses instruction-level emulation to run unmodified firmware through the real mask ROM, second-stage bootloader, FreeRTOS, and application image for ESP32, ESP32-S3, ESP32-C3, and ESP32-C6 systems, with modeled peripherals such as GPIO, UART, timers, displays, cameras, audio, storage, and wireless interfaces. The desktop command-line version supports virtual Wi-Fi with DHCP, DNS, NTP, WPA2, and NAT to the host network, allowing emulated firmware to reach real services without hardware or firmware changes. The same emulator can be compiled to WebAssembly and run in a browser, although browser execution has no network NAT. It includes board models, debugging and tracing commands, regression tests, and differential comparisons against physical ESP32 hardware. The project is distributed under the MIT License.

What esp32sim is used for

1 use taken from transcripts — each links to the moment in the video.

  • Runs ESP32 firmware on your computer or in a browser so you can test supported projects without plugging in a board. It boots real ROMs and bootloaders with models for displays, buttons, and other peripherals, and the desktop version can connect firmware to a virtual Wi-Fi network and real services.
