Tool Open source · GPL-3.0
Lap is an open-source, local-first desktop photo manager for macOS, Windows, and Linux. It works directly with existing folders and keeps original photos and videos on the user's disk rather than requiring cloud upload or a closed import database. It provides browsing and filtering by metadata, folders, locations, cameras, tags, ratings, and faces; map views; rule-based Smart Albums; collections; duplicate detection and cleanup; culling and comparison tools; editing; format support for photos, RAW files, and videos; and support for grouped assets such as Live Photos and RAW-plus-JPEG/HEIC pairs.
Its local AI features use ONNX Runtime with CLIP for image-text similarity search and InsightFace for face detection and recognition. AI search, visual similarity, subject tags, face clustering, and optional multilingual search run on the local machine. The application is built with Tauri and Rust, with a Vue/Vite/Tailwind frontend and SQLite storage; local catalog data includes collections, tags, ratings, culling states, Smart Album rules, AI indexes, face data, and thumbnails, while the original media remains in ordinary filesystem folders.
Lap is distributed as desktop packages for macOS, Windows, and Linux, including a Homebrew cask, Debian packages, and AppImages. It is licensed under GPL-3.0-or-later.
