open-compute

open-compute is a self-hosted Cloudflare Workers-compatible platform that packages the Worker runtime, control plane, scheduler, storage, queues, cron, workflows, and related bindings into one Rust binary for infrastructure controlled by its operator. It supports module Workers, familiar bindings, and Wrangler-based deployment, with SQLite for platform metadata and local filesystem storage by default; S3-compatible object storage is optional.

Overview

The binary uses a pinned, checksum-verified workerd fork to execute isolated Workers, while its control plane handles ingress, APIs, scheduling, supervision, deployments, readiness, shutdown, and recovery. Deployments are immutable and content-addressed, and the platform includes KV, D1, R2, Durable Objects, Queues, Workflows, Cache, static assets, service bindings, and other documented compatibility surfaces. It is designed for a single node and does not provide Cloudflare's global edge, cross-region replication, or a high-availability cluster.

open-compute is built in Rust and distributed as a release executable with embedded, verified runtime payloads. It is licensed under Apache-2.0; its packaged workerd fork remains subject to the applicable upstream Cloudflare workerd licensing.

What open-compute is used for

2 uses taken from transcripts — each links to the moment in the video.

  • Runs the Cloudflare Workers programming model on hardware you control. It packages the worker runtime, storage, queues, cron, workflows, and related services into one Rust binary.

  • A self-hosted open-source platform that runs the Cloudflare Workers programming model on a machine the user owns. It combines workers, KV, D1, R2, durable objects, queues, and workflows in a single Rust binary without Kubernetes or database sidecars.
