OpenHands

OpenHands is an open-source, self-hosted developer control center for running autonomous coding agents and automations, including agents that work on GitHub issues. Its Agent Canvas starts conversations and connects to local, remote, or cloud agent backends, including Docker containers, virtual machines, OpenHands Cloud or Enterprise infrastructure, and ACP-compatible agents such as Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Pi, and OpenCode. Automations can run on schedules or webhook events and integrate with services including Slack, GitHub, Linear, Notion, and Datadog. The repository includes the Agent Canvas frontend, backend selection, and local-stack orchestration; the Agent Server provides the REST API for running multiple agents on a host, while related repositories provide the SDK, TypeScript client, and automation services. It can use remote model providers or language models installed locally.

What OpenHands is used for

3 uses taken from transcripts — each links to the moment in the video.

  • Runs self-hosted autonomous coding agents that work on GitHub issues using either remote providers or locally installed language models.

  • Started as an MIT-licensed coding agent and has evolved into a platform for running coding agents — including the harness, the infrastructure, and a control plane to monitor agents at scale. It can run agents locally in Docker containers or in cloud environments like VMs and Kubernetes, and supports sandboxing coding agents per the principle of least privilege.

  • The GitHub repository for OpenHands, the open-source coding agent that the company co-founded over two years ago to give software developers a say in how AI changes their jobs. It was originally launched as an interface that spun up a fresh Docker container for every new agent conversation.
