Tailscale

Tailscale is a networking service for creating private WireGuard-based networks between a user's devices and servers. It can provide remote access over SSH and route traffic through an authorized device configured as an exit node, such as a local Mac, so external websites see that device's network address rather than the server's data-center address.

Overview

The project includes the open-source `tailscaled` daemon and `tailscale` command-line tool, with the daemon running on Linux, Windows, macOS, and to varying degrees on FreeBSD and OpenBSD. The repository also supplies code used by Tailscale's mobile applications; platform-specific GUI wrappers and hosted-service components are separate. Packages are provided for several distributions, and the project uses WireGuard with authentication features including 2FA, OAuth, and SSO.

What Tailscale is used for

9 uses taken from transcripts — each links to the moment in the video.

  • Connects the user's machines through a private network so SSH can reach the server from anywhere.

  • A networking service the video uses to route the Grok Bot cloud computer's traffic through the creator's local Mac as an exit node, making websites see a residential home IP instead of a data-center IP.

  • Provides the encrypted networking layer for point-to-point tunneling.

  • Enabled remote access to the personal media-player setup.

  • Provides remote access to development machines and supports the T3 Code shared development server workflow.

  • Private networking service used to expose a development server so changes could be tested from another computer.

  • Provides per-profile tailnet connections, accounts, and exit nodes for Tailtab.

  • Keeps the self-hosted development server behind a private network.

  • Used via a tsdev skill to host dev servers remotely
