ThinkRail

ThinkRail is an agentic integrated development environment from JetBrains that runs the pi coding agent inside a workspace-oriented IDE. It provides isolated Git worktree-based workspaces, a Monaco editor, file and diff views, terminals, concurrent agent chats, shared plans, subagent delegation, and GitHub pull-request and CI workflows.

Overview

Project knowledge is stored in a graph of SPEC.md files that the agent reads and maintains through dedicated spec tools. ThinkRail also loads reusable Agent Skills, provides workflows for project setup and pull requests, supports web research and rendered diagrams or previews, and connects to MCP servers with approval controls. Under the hood, a Bun HTTP/WebSocket engine host runs one in-process pi session per chat, while a typed protocol connects the host to a React-based web UI; pi manages models, skills, compaction, cost, and session state, while ThinkRail manages the workspace and interface.

It is distributed as a native desktop application and as a self-contained thinkrail command-line host that can open the interface in a browser. The repository documents macOS Apple Silicon, Windows x64, and Linux x64/ARM64 distributions, provider authentication through JetBrains AI or pi-supported credentials, installation analytics and error-reporting behavior, and an Apache License 2.0 license.
