altero is a self-hosted Zotero synchronization server that works with the unmodified Zotero desktop application. It reproduces the Zotero Web API and synchronization behavior for two-way synchronization of items, collections, tags, notes, annotations, attachments, full text, group libraries, deleted objects, citations, bibliographies, and export formats. It runs as a small stack with an application, database, and attachment store, supporting SQLite or PostgreSQL, and includes a web interface for library browsing, search, accounts, imports, exports, and administration.
The server also provides OpenID Connect and SAML 2.0 sign-in, OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect authorization, passkeys, second factors, scoped expiring access for other applications, group permissions, shared collection links, and migration from zotero.org. It can be deployed with Docker or run directly with Python; its attachments are stored in a normal directory. The official Zotero iOS and Android applications are not supported because they do not allow their API host to be replaced.
altero is licensed under the GNU AGPL v3 or later. It is an independent project rather than an official Zotero server distribution, and its documentation warns that it is under active development and should not yet be the only home of an important library.
