Backstage

Backstage is an open-source framework for building internal developer portals. Created by Spotify and hosted by the Cloud Native Computing Foundation as an Incubation-level project, it uses a centralized Software Catalog to manage services and infrastructure, including microservices, libraries, data pipelines, websites, and machine-learning models.

Overview

Its built-in Software Templates create projects with standardized organizational tooling, while TechDocs uses a "docs like code" approach to create, maintain, find, and use technical documentation. An ecosystem of open-source plugins extends the portal's functionality, including the Tech Insights plugin discussed in the videos. Backstage is licensed under the Apache License 2.0.
