git-knife is a desktop GUI for editing Git commit metadata, including messages, author and committer names and email addresses, and author and committer dates. It can open a repository and edit a local branch by its ref without checking it out, leaving the working tree untouched.
The application shells out to the system Git CLI and rebuilds commits with `git commit-tree`, reusing each commit's original tree so the file contents are not changed. It supports literal or regular-expression find-and-replace across metadata fields, previews changes before applying them, preserves merge parents when rebuilding the commit graph, and creates an automatic backup ref for restoration. It also warns about rewriting pushed history and flags signed commits whose signatures would be affected.
The repository describes reorder, squash, and drop operations as not yet implemented. Development requires Git 2.x, Node.js with pnpm, and Rust; Tauri build workflows target macOS, Linux, and Windows.
