Chrome DevTools is a set of web authoring, debugging, and performance analysis tools built into Google Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers. Maintained by the Chromium/Chrome team at Google, it provides DOM inspection, JavaScript debugging, network monitoring, and performance profiling for web developers.

Chrome DevTools for agents (chrome-devtools-mcp) is an MCP server from the Chrome DevTools project that lets coding agents control and inspect a live Google Chrome or Chrome for Testing browser. It uses Puppeteer for browser automation, including navigation and actions that wait for results, and exposes DevTools capabilities for recording and inspecting performance traces and insights, analyzing network requests, taking screenshots, and inspecting browser console messages with source-mapped stack traces. A CLI is also provided for use without MCP, with configuration options including headless, isolated, slim, concurrent-session, persistent-profile, WebSocket, and Android-debugging modes. It requires Node.js LTS, a current stable Chrome version or newer, and npm. Browser contents are exposed to MCP clients; performance tools may query the Google CrUX API, and usage statistics and update checks are enabled by default with an opt-out flag.

Lightpanda Browser is a headless browser built from scratch in Zig for AI agents and web automation. It is not based on Chromium, Blink, or WebKit; its implementation includes an HTML parser, V8 JavaScript support, a DOM tree and APIs, network loading, cookies, form input, proxy support, network interception, and optional robots.txt compliance. It can dump pages as HTML, Markdown, PNG, or PDF, or expose a Chrome DevTools Protocol and WebDriver BiDi server for clients such as Puppeteer and Playwright. Its native agent mode uses an LLM to navigate pages, click through flows, fill forms, and extract structured data. Sessions can be exported as deterministic, token-free PandaScript JavaScript and replayed without a model at runtime. The browser also provides an MCP server over stdio or HTTP, with isolated or shared browsing sessions for multiple agents. The project distributes nightly binaries for Linux and macOS, Docker images for Linux amd64 and arm64, and packages for Homebrew and the Arch User Repository. It can also be built from source with Zig and its V8, Libcurl, and html5ever dependencies.

Playwright is an open-source framework for web testing and browser automation, developed in the Microsoft repository. It drives Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit through a single API and includes an end-to-end test runner with isolated browser contexts, auto-waiting, web-first assertions, resilient locators, parallel execution, and reusable authentication state. Its tooling also includes a browser-automation library, CLI for coding agents, MCP server for AI-agent and LLM-driven automation, and tracing that records actions, DOM snapshots, network requests, console messages, screenshots, and videos for debugging.
