OpenDerm

OpenDerm is an open-source robotic imaging system for creating high-resolution, reproducible 3D maps of skin and comparing scans of the same site over time to detect early signs of skin cancer. Its three-computer architecture uses one Raspberry Pi with an Octopus Pro/Klipper controller and Pico bridge for the X, Y, and Z axes, a second Raspberry Pi for the CAN-controlled rotation axis, Canon EOS R7 camera, distance sensors, homing, and standoff regulation, and a workstation for 3D reconstruction and longitudinal comparison. The documented workflow covers calibration, scanning, image capture, reconstruction, registration, uncertainty analysis, and comparison. The software requires Python 3.11 or newer and includes motion-control services, camera-capture tools, collision guards, and command-line controls for the robot axes.

What OpenDerm is used for

1 use taken from transcripts — each links to the moment in the video.

  • A research system that moves a camera over the body to create repeatable, high-resolution 3D maps of skin, enabling later scans of the same site to be registered and compared for change.
