pngdeer is a lossy PNG compressor written in Rust, available as a command-line tool and an in-browser WebAssembly application. It searches palette sizes from 2 to 256 colors, tests dithering and other palette-generation options, and scores each result with the SSIMULACRA2 perceptual metric. It keeps the smallest file that reaches its target quality, selecting the quality automatically or accepting a fixed target. The command-line and browser versions use the same Rust code and produce identical files; browser compression runs locally without uploading images. pngdeer is free software released under the MIT license.
