Mailcheap is a self-hosted newsletter application built with Next.js that uses Amazon SES for email delivery. It provides an editor with live email preview, Markdown and raw HTML support, signup forms, unsubscribe handling, a public archive, campaign statistics, and an API for contacts and campaign drafts.
Before sending, it checks requirements such as a subject, preview text, unsubscribe link, postal address, verified domain, and Gmail's message-size limit. Campaigns can be tested, scheduled, and sent in batches through Upstash QStash, with engaged readers sent first. SES delivery, bounce, and complaint events are received through Amazon SNS; bounced or complaining addresses are suppressed across newsletters, and a campaign pauses when its bounce or complaint thresholds are exceeded.
The application uses MongoDB for contacts, campaigns, and statistics, and can optionally use Upstash Redis for shared rate limits and Vercel Blob for editor image uploads. It supports multiple newsletters in one installation and can expose archives on custom domains. The repository is an MIT-licensed, one-time open-source release with no support, disabled issues, and no planned updates.
