MySQL

MariaDB Server is an open-source relational database developed by a global community with the MariaDB Foundation and MariaDB plc. It began as a fork of MySQL led by members of the original MySQL team and maintains substantial MySQL wire-protocol and syntax compatibility, making it a database backend for applications such as the Magic application builder. The server supports pluggable storage engines including InnoDB, Aria, MyRocks, ColumnStore, Spider, and S3; asynchronous, semi-synchronous, and parallel replication; and Galera synchronous multi-primary clustering. Its SQL features include vector search with a built-in VECTOR type and HNSW indexing, common table expressions, window functions, temporal tables, sequences, JSON functions, GIS, full-text search, role-based access control, pluggable authentication, encryption at rest, and TLS connections. It is licensed under version 2 of the GNU General Public License.

Microsoft SQL Server is a relational database management system (RDBMS) developed and maintained by Microsoft. It accepts SQL/T-SQL queries and transactions and produces query results, backups (.bak), exports (CSV, BCP), and data for downstream services; notable capabilities include the T-SQL engine, stored procedures, In-Memory OLTP (Hekaton), columnstore indexes, Temporal Tables, JSON/XML support, PolyBase, and high-availability features such as Always On Availability Groups, replication, and clustering. SQL Server runs on Windows and supported Linux distributions, is offered on-premises and in Azure (including managed variants), and is distributed under commercial licensing with free Developer and Express editions.

Magic Cloud is an open-source, self-hosted full-stack application builder and AI-agent platform. Its API Wizard connects to databases such as SQLite, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and SQL Server and generates secured REST APIs with authentication, role-based access control, CRUD operations, and business logic; endpoints can then be extended from plain-English descriptions without a separate build or deployment step. It can also generate database-backed applications, wrap APIs described by OpenAPI or Swagger specifications, run scheduled Hyperlambda jobs, and expose endpoints as MCP tools for clients such as Claude, Cursor, and Codex. The runtime uses Hyperlambda, a compiled .NET execution environment. The project says its generator produces an abstract syntax tree rather than unrestricted function-call text, allowing generated invocations to be checked against available functions, while sandboxing and RBAC restrict execution. Magic Cloud is self-hostable, distributed under the MIT license, and is developed in the polterguy/magic repository.

Vitess is an open-source, cloud-native database system that provides a MySQL-compatible interface while extending MySQL for larger-scale deployments. Its built-in sharding routes application queries across shards without requiring sharding logic in the application; the video identifies VTGate as the intelligent proxy that parses MySQL queries and sends them to the appropriate shard, with sharding plans specified in a JSON VSchema file. Vitess also provides query rewriting, caching, connection pooling, materialized views, cross-shard messaging, live resharding, background schema changes, and automatic detection and repair of primary failures. It is a graduated Cloud Native Computing Foundation project.

SQLite is a self-contained, serverless, zero-configuration, transactional SQL database engine implemented as a C library. It was created and is primarily maintained by D. Richard Hipp and the SQLite development team and is widely used as an embedded database in applications, devices, and browsers.
